Beautiful Columnar Cactus Flower

14 December 2009 3 Comments

This beautiful columnar cactus flower is one of my favourites. They are huge flowers which remain open most of the day. The cerus cactus they are from is equally spectacular and as you can see in this image it flowers prolifically.

I have a small planter of cacti…2 are small, round and very spiny. The 3rd is columnar….about 6-7 inches and has sprouted “buds” between the ribs….one is new, very small. the other larger, both rather elliptical shape. Could these be flower buds or….new arms or what?? I am so pleased that I have had these plants for 4 mos. and they arent dead yet! Thanks….Karen

If they are growing quickly they are flower buds, if very slowly new arms.
